Sesson, also called Jokei (如圭. 1504-1589), is one of the Muromachi periods (1336-1573) most outstanding painters. He was not living in the art centres of his time but spent the last years of his life as a Zen monk in Tamura (Iwashiro). Sesson studied the Chinese painting styles of the Song-Dynasty (960-1279) and of the Yuan-Dynasty (1271-1368) as well as the art of his predecessor, the great Japanese painter Sesshū (1420-1506). Sessons paintings are considered more elegant, but also less powerful than the paintings of Sesshū.
